Career counseling is an essential function of the Office of Career Services (OCS) as it enables current participants, fresh graduates and even alumni to set their career goals and have a well defined career path. this polishes and reflects the unique brand within them. As a result, they become more career focused and better prepared for employment tmhrough appropriate questioning and interrogation techniques. Alumni are also encouraged to make contact during counseling hours to discuss their professional issues.
Job Facilitation and Advisory
OCS assists participants and graduates to make informed career decisions by designing their career path. Although the primary responsibility is to facilitate participants, fresh and experienced graduates in the job market for employment and internship, OCS has brought top organizations of the country on its panel. These organizations share details about open opportunties at their organizations with OCS and request for participant/graduate profiles to meet their recruitment needs. UMT participants and graduates are sent job alerts through various means; email, notice boards and online job portal. It provides the alumni and fresh graduates with ideal opportunities to stay connected with their alma mater and also enable UMT to capitalize on its resources in the job market for faster and better placements. OCS at UMT intends to target 13,000 current participants and more than 14,000 graduates and alumni for such purposes.
Participants and Alumni also receive job leads through email after doing a indepth labor market research via newspapers, multiple portals and other sources. If participants/graduates wish to receive Job Leads they can inform OCS through an email, personal visit or phone call. SMS feature will be active in the near future for the same objective.
Classroom Sessions, Personality Development & Training Workshops
The corporate attitude has to be inculcated into the minds of fresh graduates and alumni as well. This is delivered by organizing personality development and training workshops in either during classroom sessions or separately, tailored to help them polish, enhance and manage their personal brand along with their professional advancement requirements.
Industry personnel and successful alumni are invited to the campus for sharing their views/experiences as well as real time practices and emerging trends of the industry. Such invitations are capitalized by the OCS tribe for obtaining industry feedback regarding UMT graduates and the latest employment trends.
CV/Resume Development and Interview Preparation
Resume writing is one of the significant services of OCS for UMT students, graduates and alumni. In resume writing students are facilitated to develop goods resumes by providing sample resume and other relevant document which are helpful in developing effective resume. For resume writing student can get an appointment for individual/group counseling sessions at OCS. Workshop sessions for developing resumes are conducted with the students of the passing out semester of different programs.
Mock Interview and Employement Test
Mock Interview and Employment Test are designed and conducted quaterly every year. The sessions are open for all disciplines at UMT when announced. This exercise not only helps the job applicant learn what is expected in a job interview, but also improves the applicant's self-presentation, reduce their anxiety and stress about interviews and help boost confidence for latter.
The employement tests are taken by the OCS whereas, top industrialists are invited to conduct the mock interview sessions along with the OCS tribe. Mock interviews are videotaped and then shown to the candidates for feedback.The mock interviewer provides a constructive feedback on all aspects of the interview process through the evaluation sheet routed between the panel.
At the same time, such sessions enable HR officials from the industry to meet their recruitment needs (if any) in a cost effective manner.
On-Campus Recruitment Drives
OCS at UMT conducts various on-campus recruitment drives related to diverse functional areas. Organizations visit UMT and present their company along with conducting their field-special recruitment tests and/or interview sessions for the eligible candidates. Various organizations recruit candidates from UMT either for a job or internship program and share their experiences with us.
It is a cumbersome activity and hence majority of the organizations find it difficult to trace the right talent which they can easily find at a common point (UMT campus). Recruitment drives are fruitful for both; job seekers and employers, because it works as an easy, effective and efficient way to find the right candidate for the right job at the right place. Similarly, candidates do not have to make a vigorous effort to go out in the market and search for jobs and drop CVs around.
OCS organizes a mega Job/Career Fair between November - December anually and a domain specific Job/Career Fair in the mid year. The mega Job/Career Fair includes more than 70 organizations at one platform (UMT Lahore campus) from diverse industries where as domain specific Job/Career Fair invites one or two industries to use UMT as their platform and perform the recruitment activity.
These events are organized to help employers arrive at a convenient location to meet, select and hire the best prospective job seeker(s) for their organization. The recruitment activity includes organization HR officials, heavy advertisement and structural arrangements (tables/booths) where resumes can be collected and also where business cards can be exchanged. If possible, preliminary interviews are also conducted on the spot.
Job/Career Fair does not only facilitate the organization only but helps bridging and maintaining industry-academia relations.
Graduate Directory is one of the major contributions of OCS for the graduating students of different disciplines at UMT. OCS publishes 2-3 graduate directories each year. About 80-100 profiles are published in one directory and this activity is in practice since 2011. The 1000 hard copies of the directories are dispatched internally and through courier to HR Heads Recruitment and Marketing Managers of different organizations in the corporate sector to bring in their notice about our fresh graduate needs. The softcopies of graduate directories are sent to senior recruitment executives in the corporate world.
The graduates who get their resumes published in the directory receive calls for interview even without applying in these organizations. Keeping in view significance of these directories OCS plans to bring improvements in developing the directories in a more effective way.
Promoting UMT Brand Name
OCS is aggressively engaged in promoting UMT Brand name in the industry/Job market through various publications such as periodical newsletters, brochure, graduate directory, and 360 degree social media platform.
